KOM Monday - Tips for Heat Embossing

Hello, it's Rachel joining you all on this wonderful Monday afternoon! My favorite holiday is only 3 days away! And that  means it's time to start working on those holiday cards...

Today I'm playing with the October Kit of the Month (which is on sale right now!) and heat embossing.

I love this beautiful cardinal stamp. To create this card, I first stamped the entire image in brown ink and colored it with Copic markers. To highlight the cardinal, I stamped him again on vellum and heat embossed with red glitter embossing powder. I fussy cut just the cardinal (no branches) and colored on the BACK of the vellum with my Copics again.

Then I gently adhered the finished vellum cardinal on top of the stamp on my card. Embossing on vellum is such an easy way to add some UMPH to your card.  The sentiment was heat embossed in gold.

My last card also uses the October Kit of the Month. I stamped the owl in black, heat embossed the sentiment in gold, and then used my Versamarker to color some hearts and heat emboss those hearts in glitter red powder.

Here are some tips for achieving a clean heat emboss - (1) Always use a de-static bag to prep your paper! I use an 'embossing buddy', but you can also use a powder tool (which is just baby powder) or even a dryer sheet. (2) Make sure any inking or coloring around the sentiment is dry (or else the powder will latch on). (3) Once you've stamped and added the powder, use a small dry paintbrush to brush away any stray powder that's left on your card. (4) Finally, I always like to start my heat emboss process with the heat gun BEHIND the paper. Then once it starts to melt slightly, I bring the heat tool to the front to finish it off. This helps to stop any powder from blowing off your card before it's melted.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!!
